A new issue of Popular Entertainment Studies is now available. Vol 9, no 1-2 (September 2018)

Marking 250 years since the ‘birth’ of the modern circus, two articles in this edition examine aspects of the early circus in Edinburgh and Scandinavia, bringing to light early manifestations of circus and the ways that music supported the dramaturgy of its performances. Threading through this edition is a strong sense of the different sorts of methodological approaches applied by researchers working in the field of popular entertainments. Other topics include the emergence of the comic tramp figure in American variety, and the contemporary business and performance of Brazilian samba in Australia.

Topics included have referred to live theatre performances, as well as to manifestations on television and film. The deadline for full submission is May 1, 2019.
