Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point Cambria; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses).
  • All images, illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end. Images, etc are labelled as specified in guidelines
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  • If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.

Author Guidelines

About

Popular Entertainment Studies is published electronically twice a year and accepts submissions of scholarly articles throughout the year. These should be accompanied by an abstract of up to 150 words and a list of up to 10 keywords in alphabetical order. Contributions should generally be between 5000 and 7000 words in length including endnotes, but excluding abstract and keywords. Longer or shorter pieces of particular significance may be considered at the editors' discretion. Before formally submitting an article you should send an expression of interest to the General Editor.

 

When you are ready to submit your work you will need to enter the journal article submission workflow by using the For Authors link to the right of this page. You will be asked to set up a login and password and then you can begin the five step process. Please submit one electronic copy of your work. The article should be completely anonymous to facilitate a blind peer review.

 

Formatting

Please ensure that documents are formatted in Microsoft Word with the filename extension “.doc” or “.docx”.

 

Text: Cambria12pt. Use margins of 72 pt (2.5cm) top and bottom, 90 pt (3.2 cm) left and right. The text should employ italics, rather than underlining (except with URL

addresses).

 

Title: Use Cambria 28 pt bold for your article title, with an initial capital letter for any proper nouns.

 

Abstract: Use Cambria 12 pt italics

 

Keywords: Please provide five or six keywords to help readers find your article.

Position immediately after Abstract & separate each keyword with a comma

 

Indented text: Any indented text, such as quotes, are to be indented and right hand side justified

 

Line Spacing: Single spacing (text, paragraphs); Single line space between paragraphs; Single line space between in-text subheadings and paragraphs

 

Headings: In-text section headings are to be centered, font (Cambria, 12 pt italics & bold). Numbering of section headings (if used) should follow roman numerals.

 

Figures and Images: If you intend to submit images with your article, please insert them in your text and, as well, send a separate file of images only, clearly marked. They should conform to the following guidelines:

  • The required image format is JPG, with a resolution of 72dpi (screen not print resolution).
  • Image size should be under 100kb
  • Portrait images should be a maximum of 600 pixels in height, with equivalent width dimension.
  • Landscape images should be a maximum of 600 pixels in height, with equivalent width dimension.
  • Label each image clearly. The label should be centered directly under the image (Font: Cambria 10 pt, Italics). Images should be accompanied with a numerical running order, e.g.: Figure 1. ; Figure 2. ; Figure 3. preceding the label text.­­­­­

 

Notes and References: For additional explanatory notes and references, use automatic endnotes, indicated via superscript numerals (1-2-3 format) in the body of the text, placed immediately after the end of a clause or sentence (i.e. following a comma or full stop). Where available, URLs for the references should be provided. Please note that the journal follows the Chicago style for referencing. For a quick guide to the Chicago style, go to:

The referencing style should be adhered to scrupulously.

 

Quotes: Use double quotation marks for quotations. Long quotations over three lines in length should be indented from both margins without quotation marks and set apart from the main body of the text via a blank line above and below.

 

Correspondence details: If your contribution is accepted for publication, you will need to provide an email address for the corresponding author.

 

Anonymity: Ensure your identity and that of your co-authors is not revealed in the text of your article or in your manuscript files when submitting the manuscript for review.

Copyright Notice

Copyright for all material published in Popular Entertainment Studies resides with the Author.

Readers of Popular Entertainment Studies may, however, save and/or print any files from the journal for their personal use, as long as no alterations are made to the material and any subsequent citation is properly acknowledged. For any other use/reproduction of material (e.g. for course materials), express prior permission must be obtained from the journal's General Editor.

Authors are welcome to re-use/reprint their work elsewhere, as long as such publication includes due acknowledgement of the work's prior appearance in Popular Entertainment Studies. Authors are individually responsible for obtaining any necessary copyright permissions for images, photos, or other materials reproduced in their articles and for including any required credits. Copyright clearance for their use must be lodged with the journal if your submission is accepted for publication.
